Baby hat--circular knitting

I'm making a baby hat. I cast on 72 stitches on a size 6/16" circular needle. I wasn't able to join it because the stitches didn't go all the way around. After about 2 rows, I was able to join in the round, but the yarn seems stretched.

Can you give me any advice?

YOUR ANSWER

Really all you can do is to persevere as is or you can use a shorter circular needle or switch to double pointed needles.

Personally, I would try to find a shorter circular needle.
