How to do a Divide in a Scarf Pattern

...to allow the one end to slip through the middle of the scarf?

Hello,

For my scarf I have to cast on 30 sts and work 45 rows in k1, pl rib.

Then it says to divide in half for opening. And this is what I don't know how to do.

YOUR ANSWER

There are a couple of ways you can do this.

The first is to knit the first 15 sts in k1, p1, rib and then turn the work and continue working your rib on these 15 stitches until you have added the length you need for your opening.

Then you rejoin your yarn to the other 15 stitches and repeat the process.

When you have completed both sides (i.e. both have the same number of rows and finishing with a wrongside row on both) you rejoin your yarn to the first piece of work and keeping to you rib pattern knit across all 30 stitches on your needle.

The other way to do it is to knit both sides at the same time.

You knit across the first 15 stitches with the current ball of yarn, but when you get to the second 15 stitches you need to attach another ball to the work.

You can then continue knitting your rows as you would normally but when you reach the opening you change from one ball of yarn to the other, so that you are actually knitting two separate pieces of knitting on the same needle.

When your two pieces are the desired length (and finishing on a wrongside row), you just use the first ball of wool to knit across all thirty stitches.
