How to increase stitch after purling
by Melanie
Hi, I have another question about my knitting instructions.
It says: ' 1st row (WS) - Purl ' I have done this row casting on 13 stitches.
The second part ' 2nd row - Inc once knitways in each st to end = 26sts. '
I have looked at videos on how to increase my stitches but it keeps coming apart after I do my fourth stitch and I have to start again after this.
How do I increase my stitches after purling it?
And also ' 3rd row - P12, inc once purlways in each of next 2 sts, P12 = 28 sts. '
I also don't understand this line. Can you please help me
Thank you very much.

Hi Melanie - welcome back!
Cast on thirteen stitches.
1st row: Purl (knit a complete row purling each stitch, turn your work)
2nd row: Inc once knitways in each st to end = 26 sts.
This row is a knit row. The instructions mean that for each stitch you insert the left hand needle into the front of the stitch on the right hand needle and pull the yarn through the loop to form a stitch as you normally would, but instead of slipping the new stitch off the left hand needle, you insert the right hand needle into the back of the same stitch and pull the yarn through to form a second stitch (from the same base stitch). When you have these two new stitches on the right hand needle, you slip the original stitch off the left hand needle.
Repeat that action for every stitch in along the row.
3rd row: P12, inc once purlways in each of next 2 sts, P12 = 28 sts.
For this row you purl 12 stitches as you would normally and then do two purlwise increases.
To increase purlwise (yarn at front of work) insert the right hand needle into the back loop of the next stitch and pull through the loop to form a purl stitch, but instead of slipping the new stitch off the left hand needle, you insert the right hand needle into the front loop of the same stitch and pull the yarn through to form a second stitch (from the same base stitch). When you have these two new stitches on the right hand needle, you slip the original stitch off the left hand needle.
Do that twice and purl the remaining 12 stitches.
Hope that helps. If anything is not clear, just leave a comment on this page and I will do what I can to help.
