It doesn't add up!

I am knitting a baby sweater. Instructions say; Cast on 32 stitches. Knit 35 rows. I did that.

Now it says; Using the backward loop method, cast on 4 stitches at the beginning of the next 8 rows.
You now have 64 stitches. Knit 17 rows even.

Okay, my question is...How can I end up with 64 stitches if I started with 32 and only am adding 4 stitches at the beginning of the next 8 rows? If I add 4 + 32 that equals 36, not 64.

I have read it over and over and it just doesn't make sense to me.

HELP!
Thanks,
Linda

You need to add 4 stitches to each of the eight rows to get 64 stitches. Like this:

Row 1: 32 + 4 = 36
Row 2: 36 + 4 = 40
Row 3: 40 + 4 = 44
Row 4: 44 + 4 = 48
Row 5: 48 + 4 = 52
Row 6: 52 + 4 = 56
Row 7: 56 + 4 = 60
Row 8: 60 + 4 = 64

Hope this helps...
