Loose tension in middle of row

by Jan
(Litchfield, OH, USA)

I find that my stitches are looser in the middle of my row than they are on the ends. How can I make them more consistent?

YOUR ANSWER

Practice.

Lots and lots of practice.

Over time as you gain experience your tension will become much more even. Unfortunately there is no substitute for practice. You can try slowing down and concentrating on each stitch, but I generally find that this just makes new knitters more anxious about their knitting.

Just keep knitting and be proud of what you are achieving.

Practice, practice, practice. I was afraid that would be the answer. I'm running out of people to give scarves to, and don't want to tackle even an "easy" sweater until my gauge gets more consistent. Do you have any suggestions for other patterns I can practice with?

I've been looking at patterns for dishcloths, so I may take that route.....little investment, useable results. Thanks for your input.

How about trying a knee blanket? Plenty of knitting involved (so lots of opportunity for practice) and you end up with a useful item at the end.

And all it really a knee blanket is, is a really wide scarf!
