Purl Stitch and Knit Stitch

I am not sure what stitch I left off on whether it is a Purl Stitch or a Knit Stitch, and I am starting a new row?

How can you tell the difference?

By the way the stitch looks. A knit stitch is smooth and resembles a 'V', whereas a purl stitch is kinda bumpy.
