Sewing up a baby shawl

by Isobel Naylor

I have knitted a shawl for my grand-child, but now that I have come to the part where you sew it altogether I have had to stall for a little while.

It has to have the edges sewn to the middle part with a flat seam (I think it's a flat seam). Now I know I will have to gather the edges a little bit to fit them to the middle but when I sew the flat seam there is a ridge on the right side.....Is this supposed to be?

Will be very greatful for any advice.

Thank You Isobel.

Hi Isobel.

I certainly wouldn't want a ridge on the right side if I was making the shawl!

What I suggest is that you do an invisible seam instead. With this method you sew it up with the right side facing you so that you can see how the seam is going together as you are working.

Instructions for the invisible seam method are on this page.

Good luck!

Notice the different look and feel on some pages?

I am currently moving all of the pages to a new CSS driven template but with around 700 pages it is going to take me a while to get it done.

So in the meantime, I hope you will forgive the switch from one look to another as you navigate through the site...
