shaping armholes

by Laura
(Melbourne)

I have tried knitting my first jumper which the arms didnt seem to match the armholes. the pattern reads as follows: dec one st at end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 40.

My confusion is with the every foll alt row, does this mean every second row? In which case the armhole would only be shaped on one side and the other would be straight.

I just can't understand it can anyone advise please??

YOUR ANSWER

I suspect your pattern instructions are incorrect.

Normally instructions for the armhole decreases for a sleeve require you to decrease at each end of each decrease row, not a single decrease at one end.

Every foll alt row means every second row, and for a sleeve, that usually means every right side row.

Hope this helps...
