Knitting Naturally

I have been knitting for 45 years and am having trouble with a simple scarf. I am doing a stocking knit pattern. both of the sides have curled up a lot. While I was knitting I figured when I'm done I could block it (steam the sides flat). But that didn't happen. The sides curl just as badly. While I was trying to figure out the problem I started another scarf with different yarn and different size needles Same curling.

What am I doing wrong.

YOUR ANSWER

Stocking stitch will always curl. What I normally do is to knit the first and last stitch on every row so that I have a garter stitch on each edge.

It usually stops the curling. Other than that you can add a narrow border around the edge. You can pick up and knit along the edges for a couple of rows or a crocheted edge.

Thanks a lot. I crocheted a trim around the scarf and it flattened out. I was seriously considering giving up knitting when I had so much trouble with a scarf. I appreciate your advice.
