Undertanding the pattern instructions - repeats

I have a pattern that says k5, *k1, yo> What does the *k1 mean. I know the * means repeat, and k1 is knit 1, but how many times does it what me to repeat it before the yo?

YOUR ANSWER

Just once. The * means repeat from this point, further on in your pattern it should tell you how many times you need to repeat all of the instructions from the * to that point in the pattern.
