what is meant by instruction "&mdahs.........8sts."???

In the free "Knit Fall Shawl" pattern on the
www.craftyarncouncil.com site, Row 4:
(Inc 1 st in next st,p 1) 2 times, inc 1 st in next
st &mdahs;
8 sts.

Question: what on earth is meant by
&mdahs;
8 sts.

As you may have guessed, am just getting back to knitting after decades away. This is probably something really simple but I can't find anything about it on the web & you are my last hope. Thank you, so much, for any light you are able to shine on these perplexing instructions.

Not sure, but typing "&mdash" is html code for an em dash, or long dash. It is possible that this is an error where they typed the html code wrong on the website, thus causing it to display as "&mdahs". I notice the pattern uses em dashes in several lines, so would feel fairly confident this was just a coding error when making the website. Substitute a - for the "&mdahs" and you should be fine.
