I like the look of stockinette stitch but, whilst making a scarf, it has rolled at the edges. I do not mind knitting a second scarf to attach to the back to unfurl it, but what is the best stitch pattern to use on the second (back side)?

double knit

I would suggest that you go on Lucy
Neatby's Double Knit DVD as soon as
possible. If you learn double knitting you
will have a wonderful field of knit stitch
on both sides of your work...
