Button Bands on cardigan sweaters

When knitting a cardigan sweater I always have a problem with the button band when the instructions say

".......knit these two rows until the band WHEN SLIGHTLY STRETCHED fits up front.....".

Is there some sort of guide for this? How much is slightly stretched?
