How many stitches to cast on

by Elaine Durut
(Australia)

I want to knit using 8 ply wool and using 6.5 or 6.0 (metric) knitting needles. Project needs to measure 26". How many stitches do I cast on?

I am about to commence knitting a cowl with a new method but am most unsure how to start. I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

YOUR ANSWER

The only way to know for sure how many stitches you need to cast on is to knit a tension square using those needles and knitting in the knitting stitch pattern you are planning to use.

I could make a guess at the number of stitches but would probably get it wrong as I don't know which stitch pattern you are using and I have no idea whether you are a tight or a loose knitter.

Sorry...
